URBAN SKETCHES IN LONDON 2015

Urban Sketchers (London) Group has a good size membership of keen sketchers now. It has been going just over a year.

I try to attend the ‘sketch crawls’ as much as I can.  In the past year I was able to go to draw with the Group in The City of London near St Paul’s Cathedral, to The Mall and St James’s Park, Westminster and with another sketching group called Drawing London on Location, in Regent’s Park, London.

PORTOBELLO ROAD, LONDON, SKETCHES IN JULY

PEN DRAWING, PORTOBELLO RD JULY DRAW LONDON PADDINGTON BEAR STALL PORTOBELLO RD JULY DRAW LONDON 1 SIGNS PORTOBELLO RD 1 JULY DRAW LONDON copy

I was on the Sketch Crawl on Saturday, 12 July, organised by the Meet Up Group Drawing London on Location.

It was very hot and crowded!

The crowds were more than I had expected, in fact it was rather like the masses of people who come to the Notting Hill Carnival.

There were a lot of us sketchers and we were dotted around the area, mostly sitting on sketching stools or on the ground. It is tiring work.

I particularly liked the view of the market from Denbigh Close, where there was a stall selling Paddington Bears, and a couple of Wombles on the top shelf!

Do you remember Wombles?

SHELDRICK WILDLIFE TRUST SPONSORED RUN BY ELEPHANTS ON WIMBLEDON COMMON

Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Elephants did a sponsored run in May, on a very soggy and muddy Wimbledon Common

Last month I went to watch the sponsored run in aid of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which helps to protect and conserve wildlife in Kenya. They help run an orphans’ project for orphan baby elephants among other things. The runners all dressed up in baggy elephant suits, with tails at the back. Not a good look! At the end of the run their legs were covered in mud almost to the thighs.  Friend Rhiannan was running, while Max and I waited in the Windmill cafe on the Wimbledon Common.  Coffee and bakewell tart.

WIMBLEDON VILLAGE FAIR, SKETCH FROM LAST SATURDAY 21 JUNE

WIMBLEDON VILLAGE FAIR 1, JUNE 2014

The annual Wimbledon Village Fair was bursting at the seams (if that is possible on Wimbledon Common).  The sunny weather helped. There were crowds everywhere I walked, so I bought a half of ale from the Tillingbourne Brewery Ale stand to drink by the pond, while I did this sketch. And very good it was – the ale I mean. You can see it in the foreground.

ST MARY’S CHURCH MERTON PARK, SUMMER FAIR, PIMM’S TENT

London suburbs. Here is the corner of the church field last Saturday, with the Pimm’s Tent and the tables set out for drinks and snacks. Unfortunately it poured with rain some of the time, but a good time was had by all, nevertheless.

My sketch in crayon and chalk, on paper.
